A most attractive example of this uncommon early-nineteenth century edition of the complete works of the English philosopher John Locke, including his major philosophical work An Essay Concerning Human Understanding along with his principle political writings such as the Two Treatises of Government and the ‘Toleration’ letters.
Locke’s Works had been frequently reprinted in large and unwieldy folio volumes throughout the eighteenth century, making the present octavo edition an altogether more manageable prospect.
Purple ownership stamps of the British baronet and politician Sir Thomas Cato Worsfold (1861-1936) to front free endpapers of each volume, spotting to outer leaves of Vol. 1, the remaining volumes are otherwise generally clean with only a few occasional instances of minor spotting; light shelf wear to extremities, all hinges remain strong and intact, a few corners gently bumped.
