SHAKESPEARE (William).
The Works of William Shakespeare. Edited by Israel Gollancz. With Many Illustrations Antiquarian and Topographical.

A stunning set of Shakespeare’s complete works, edited by Shakespeare scholar and founding secretary of the British Academy Israel Gollancz (1863-1930). The order of the works follows that of the first folio, with the last volume containing the sonnets. “The present edition of The Temple Shakespeare aims at the elucidation of the text by means of illustrative drawings from old books, broadsides, antiquarian objects, maps &c., belonging, for the most part, to the poet’s own times” (Editor’s Note). With a biography of Shakespeare and glossaries of Shakespearian terms.

A fine set. Vellum a bit toned and marked; gilt bright and well preserved. Contents with minor browning to endpapers, some occasional light foxing. Panoramic view of the Thames in volume XI partially lacking, all other illustrations and tissue guard intact. Bookplate of Sidney Davidson to upper pastedown of each volume.
