Typed Quotation Signed by John Le Carré
Typed quotation from an article in the World Press review from October 1989, signed by John Le Carré.
The original article was an interview with John Le Carré, written by Viktor Orlik, it appeared in the Soviet Writers Union Weekly Literaturnaya Gazeta of Moscow. The quotation reads: “There is an enormous difference between the respect that is accorded writers in the Soviet Union and the way our brothers are seen in the West. By and large, we (in the West) have a rather indifferent attitude towards writers. In the U.S.S.R., as well as in Russian history before it, the intelligentsia, writers, artists and thinkers have held a special place in the life of society. They have a sense of high social responsibility, a need to speak for the people and address the people. In the West, because we have a social history of expressing ourselves more openly and vociferously, writers have not performed such a public function.”
