Obviously an enlightened man, Wood expresses his fears for the Polynesian race following the annexation of Fiji and the arrival of “money-grasping Europeans.” He was accompanied by the photographer George Smith, for whom he had had a dark room constructed aboard his yacht.

An issue with six plates was also published in the same year, varying only in these being mentioned on the title page.
