China Sketch ran from August 1935 to June 1937. Zhu Jinlou (1913-1992) who was born in Shanghai and educated at the Shanghai Fine Arts Academy. He worked in the field of oil paintings, gouaches, sketches and cartoons and was an art critic about contemporary artists like Huang Binhong, Pan Tianshou, and Liu Haisu. Together with Gu Fengcheng he was a founding member of ‘Dianying manhua’ [Film Cartoons] and in 1935 he became editor of the present ‘China Sketch’ magazine. Zhu became a renowned manhua artist who continued to be active in world of cartoons after the Communist takeover of China. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he was an editorial board member of ‘National Salvation Comics’(Jiuwang Manhua) and created anti-Japanese propaganda posters in Guangxi, Wuhan, and Chongqing. The magazine encapsulates the racy and decadent spirit of Shanghai during the 1930s. It features some photographs of scantily dressed Chinese ladies as well as colourful and often aggressive cartoons that engage with current norms and events, offering sharp social and political commentary.
