The author was engaged in the compilation whilst pursuing his missionary labours in Kaffraria and Natal, over a period of a bout twenty years” (Mendelssohn). Jacob Ludwig Döhne (1811-1879) was originally from the Berlin Missionary Society, and as well as this important Zulu-English dictionary, he also published Xhosa and Zulu translations of the New Testament.
