Published during the Zulu War, it provides a history of the region from the time of Chaka and looks at the colonisation of Natal with reference to the various treaties and negotiations with Dingan, Panda and the Boers. Farrar shows that “at that time Natal was certainly not in a position to maintain good and efficient self-government, whether carried on by Boers or Britons” (Mendelssohn). Mendelssohn I, pp536-7.
